Elsa EDC Partners with Upward Bound to Provide Summer Internship Opportunities for Local Students
The Elsa Economic Development Corporation is proud to partner with the Region One Education Service Center’s Upward Bound Program to provide meaningful summer internship opportunities for Delta-area high school students. Through this collaboration, two student interns have been placed with the City of Elsa, where they will spend the summer gaining hands-on experience while exploring career pathways that can shape their future.
From June 8 through July 1, 2026, the students will participate in the Upward Bound Summer Internship Program, working Monday through Wednesday. The internship is designed to give students real-world exposure to professional environments while helping them build valuable workplace skills.
One intern will be assigned to the City of Elsa Planning and Zoning Department, where they will learn about community development, city planning, land use, and the important role local government plays in shaping a growing community. The second intern will work alongside the Elsa EDC to gather vital information about the Delta area’s healthcare landscape, helping gain insight into medical services and the day-to-day operations that support community wellness.
These placements reflect Elsa EDC’s commitment to workforce development and its belief that investing in students today creates a stronger Delta area tomorrow.
Supporting Student Success Through Upward Bound
Upward Bound is a federally funded college-preparation program that serves high school students from low-income and first-generation college-going families. The program is designed to help students succeed academically, graduate from high school, and prepare for postsecondary education and future careers. By providing academic support, mentoring, career exploration, and experiential learning opportunities, Upward Bound helps students build the skills and confidence needed to achieve long-term success.
Summer internships are a key component of that mission, allowing students to connect classroom learning with real-world experiences. Through workplace shadowing, professional mentorship, and hands-on projects, students gain a deeper understanding of potential career paths while developing communication, responsibility, and problem-solving skills.
Building a Stronger Workforce Pipeline
For Elsa EDC, workforce development is an investment in the people who will lead and strengthen our communities in the future.
By partnering with programs like Upward Bound, Elsa EDC helps bridge the gap between education and employment. Students gain exposure to professional careers available right here in the Rio Grande Valley, while local organizations benefit from engaging with motivated young leaders who may one day become part of the region’s workforce.
“At Elsa EDC, our job is to connect the dots,” said Daniel Rivera, Executive Director of the Elsa Economic Development Corporation. “We work to bring together education, workforce development, local government, and community partners to create opportunities for our students and residents. Supporting programs like Upward Bound is a critical step in developing the workforce of tomorrow. When students gain hands-on experience and explore career pathways early, they’re better prepared to contribute to the future success of our region.”
The internship placements within Planning and Zoning and Elsa EDC’s healthcare research initiative showcase the diversity of career opportunities available in public service, healthcare, economic development, and local government. More importantly, they demonstrate how community partnerships can create pathways for students to envision a future of success close to home.
Looking Ahead
As the Delta Area continues to grow, developing a skilled, knowledgeable, and engaged workforce remains a top priority. Elsa EDC is committed to fostering partnerships that provide educational opportunities, career exploration, and workforce readiness experiences for local students.
We are excited to welcome these two Upward Bound interns and look forward to watching them learn, grow, and contribute throughout the summer. Their participation represents the next generation of leaders, professionals, and community builders who will help shape the future of Elsa and the greater Delta region.
Through partnerships like this one, Elsa EDC continues to fulfill its mission of creating opportunities, supporting education, and building a stronger workforce for generations to come.
