Event Recap: City of Elsa Welcomes Sonic

Sonic is officially open in Elsa, TX!

Last week, Elsa residents and friends from all over the Rio Grande Valley helped welcome the city’s first Sonic to the area. Located in front of Walmart, the new store is said to be one of the biggest in Texas, giving Elsa residents the same drive-in experience Sonic has been providing for over 60 years.

Operated by Al Trevino, CEO of CRUSH Enterprises, the newest Sonic has created over 70 jobs for local residents. Made possible by CRUSH and an incentive from Elsa EDC, the project is anticipated to become a staple within the city.

“I want to thank the city for everything they did to help this project come together,” said Al Trevino. “There is a lot of excitement here—we have the ban and the mariachi band. We’re prepared to give away a whole bunch of food in a gesture of appreciation for being welcome in this community.”

CRUSH Enterprises was founded by Treviño in 2014. The Texas-based company currently owns and operates 19 Sonic Drive-Ins in the northwestern states of Idaho, Montana, Washington, and Texas.

More than 200 visitors celebrated the Grand Opening with a live performance by the Edcouch-Elsa High School marching band, mariachi, and complimentary food and refreshments to showcase Sonic’s most popular menu items.

Sonic’s Grand Opening was made possible by a collective effort between the City of Elsa, the Elsa Economic Development Corporation, and CRUSH Enterprises.

“The local community came out and it’s a great tribute to what we do here in the city of Elsa,” said Alonzo Perez, Mayor of Elsa. “ Elsa does things big and we will continue to grow. With the help of our community, the sky is the limit.”
