In Elsa, Texas, the buzzing heartbeat of hardworking families echoes through every street corner, and leading this rhythm is Express Hardware, a community mainstay owned by the dedicated Rafael Aguilera Jr. and his wife.
Rafael recounts the inception of the hardware store, originally introduced to Elsa under a different name in 2009 by his brother. By 2022, change was in the air as his brother sought new horizons. This paved the way for Rafael and his wife to take the reins. Although the building needed some tender loving care, the couple was inspired by the rapidity and efficiency they wanted to bring to their customers. They aptly named their new venture “Express Hardware.”
“At a hardware store, you want to go in, get what you need, and move on to finishing your tasks. That’s our ethos,” shares Rafael. The location, central to the town, reaffirms their motto, “Express Hardware: Heart of a working town.” This isn’t just a catchphrase but a reflection of Elsa’s industrious spirit.
Their extensive inventory caters to a wide variety of needs, from plumbing and electrical issues to paints and building materials. “Our primary customers are DIY enthusiasts who embark on home projects,” Rafael remarks.
What’s truly commendable is the local touch Rafael adds to his business. Nearly all of the four or five employees hail from the surrounding area, strengthening the bond with the community. “It’s about having essential items available locally, so residents don’t need to drive long distances,” Rafael stresses. If they can’t provide what a customer needs, they ensure they direct them to the right place, emphasizing solution-driven customer service.
Transitioning from a 27-year-long career in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice to managing a hardware store wasn’t easy. “My knowledge was about 10% when I started,” he chuckles, “Now, I might be at 60%. But there’s Google to fill in the gaps!”
Challenges never deter Rafael. He sees every customer who enters with a problem as an opportunity to help them solve it. Be it a city account or a school requirement, he ensures they find what they’re looking for, exemplifying dedicated service.
Looking ahead, there’s ambition in Rafael’s eyes. “Our dream is to build a second, larger store to better provide for Elsa and the surrounding communities. We aim to be there for our community, especially during trying times like natural disasters.”
